Inside Us There is Light

A poem for the Winter Solstice

Dark background with a row of candles at the bottom. Poem text: Inside Us There Is Light We wait, and yearn, and welcome the long night. In frigid days, breath clouds and fingers chill, Always recall: inside us there is light. The skies grow dark with clouds and crows in flight As shopping carts rattle down the oil-slick streets We wait, and yearn, and welcome the long night. Festooned houses shine with bulbs flickering, bright To ward off sorrow resting in our hearts. Always recall: inside us there is light. Raccoons in burrows stir and sleep not quite Beneath the porch behind one broken board They wait, and yearn, and welcome the long night. The scent of boughs, sweet hope that death’s grip might Spare a world without kind justice, lending strength. Always recall: inside us there is light. And we, together here, gasp at the sight As candlelight on precious faces shines. Hands outstretched we welcome the long night. Always recall: inside us there is light. T.
