Today I’m thinking of all the ways we find to “Other” one another.
This week on Facebook I’ve seen diatribes against Syrian Refugees, against Black Lives Matter…
and perhaps more subtly, quips, comments or photos:
Against “rednecks” and half-snaked “overweight” women, or mocking Christians, Muslims, and…people from Idaho.
Some of these I’ve encountered already had people weighing in and doing a good job of it so I left them alone. Some I’ve called out in private. Some I’ve engaged in clarifying semi-public conversation about.
We have a variety of choices for how we deal with Othering. But deal with it, we must.
I’ll leave us all –myself included– with this quote from Neil Gaiman:
“I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase ‘politically correct’ wherever we could with ‘treating other people with respect’, and it made me smile.”
