These times can feel overwhelming.
There is so much pain in the world, a constant cascade of it past our eyes and ears. So much to pay attention to. So much to do.
But are we also paying attention to beauty? Are we also paying attention to kindness? Are we also paying attention to…?
Yesterday, I gave a spiritual direction client this action item:
“Make a list of five things that help you feel healthy and happy.”
What are those for you?
How often do you engage with them?
How often are you doing other things instead?
Don’t get me wrong, so much of what we are doing is important, vital work. Don’t give up. But the things that remind us of why we are doing important vital work are on that list of five. Don’t forget.
Write it down. Breathe it in. Welcome yourself home.
Let this become an invoking of good things. Let this become a spell that makes you whole.
You deserve to feel healthy and happy. And yes, you get to define those terms. We all have our own perimeters for what exactly “healthy and happy” means, for what it looks and feels like to us.
The healthier and happier you feel, the more present you can be with the rest of the world.
One suggestion: let at least some of the things on your list be small.
This isn’t a list of five ambitions, this is a list of five things that help body and soul feel free.
First on my list? Listening to music. Here’s “You’re Beautiful”. Enjoy.
And if things are still getting you down? Try to remember:
